From February 20 - 25, we welcomed 7 international leaders from Albania, Argentina, Ecuador, Kenya, Republic of Korea, Republic of North Macedonia and Ukraine for a multi-regional project entitled "Rule of Law and the U.S. Judicial System." The delegation’s objective was to examine the underlying principles of the U.S. judicial and legal systems and their basis in the Constitution and the rule of law.

Upon their arrival at the eastern Iowa airport, the leaders were greeted by Global Ties Iowa Board Member Eddy Djagou. In their hotel, they were greeted by volunteer Mary Gregg. They then had the rest of their first day to get settled and explore Iowa City.
On Friday, Feb. 21, the delegation attended the Johnson County’s Attorney’s Office and Iowa City Police Department Panel accompanied by volunteer Lynn Ouedraogo. Panel participants included Deputy Johnson County Attorney Emily Voss, Assistant Johnson County Attorney Lynn Rose, Haley Huddleston from the Johnson County Attorney’s Office, Victim Witness Coordinator Deb Peterson and the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD). After the panel, the delegation boarded the van to their cultural excursion trip at Kalona Historical Village. During their tour, the group learned about the basic beliefs of the Mennonite faith, the changes it has undergone since its origin in 16th Century Europe, and the local dairy goat industry at the Amish Dairy Goat Farm.

In the evening of Saturday, Feb. 22, the delegation went to their Iowa Table Dinners; half of the delegation was hosted by Javier Hernandez and the other half by Mary Gregg. Monday, Feb. 24 started with breakfast with Global Ties Iowa Executive Director, Amy Alice Chastain. After breakfast, the delegation departed the hotel to go to their first meeting with the US Attorney’s Office of Northern Iowa, accompanied by volunteer Amanda Potterfield. The delegation met with Chief Jack Lammers, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa. After the meeting, the group drove back to their hotel for a social reception with community members and the Global Ties Iowa network. Following the reception, the delegation was free to explore Iowa City before leaving the next day.
